Room problems, in the words people use
What people say about a room that is not working, and what it usually turns out to be once dimensions are on the record.
- “You have to turn sideways to get through it.”Almost never a shortage of space. It is one piece parked in the only route, and moving it costs nothing.
- “It is dark, and buying more lamps did not fix it.”One layer doing all the work. A room needs light at three heights before any of it reads as warm.
- “It is doing two jobs and losing both.”Two jobs sharing one patch of floor, with nothing between them. They do not need more room — they need an edge.
- “It is clean on Sunday and gone by Tuesday.”The room has no cheap way back to zero. Every tidy is a project, so it stops happening.
- “Nobody stays in it. They stand up and leave.”Comfort, and rarely the furniture. Sound, temperature, glare and having your back to a door all read as 'I would rather be elsewhere'.
- “It is finished, it is furnished, and it is completely forgettable.”Nothing in it was chosen twice. Character is repetition and contrast, not a bigger budget.
- “It is technically a room. No one has ever used it.”It is being asked to do a job the house does not need. Ask what else it could be before spending anything on what it is.
- “It is enormous, and it still feels wrong.”Square footage with no map. A big room fails by having one undifferentiated middle, not by being small.
