Room problem · Personality

“It is finished, it is furnished, and it is completely forgettable.”

What it usually is: Nothing in it was chosen twice. Character is repetition and contrast, not a bigger budget.

Hallway that is a room: A slim marble-topped console with a round brass-framed mirror above hugs one wall of a hallway, leaving the floor path fully clear.
From the worked room below: Six feet wide. Walking through ate the place. A library photograph, not your room — the test that follows is for yours.

Before anything is bought

Test · reversible
Choose one thing you already own and would defend — a colour, a material, a shape — and repeat it three times across the room, borrowing from other rooms if you must. Bring nothing new in. Leave it for a week.
It is working if
A visitor could say what the room is about, and the blank wall you meant to fill stops asking to be filled.
What would change our mind
If the repeats read as clutter rather than character, the room was short of calm, not personality — take things out before adding any. If nothing you own is worth repeating, that is the finding, and it is still not a shopping list.

Does this layer reduce the friction — or decorate around it? It works on the room you have open; with none open, it offers a worked room to start from.
