Layer light by job, height and time of day

One bright source is not the same as a well-lit room. Useful light is layered: ambient light lets you orient, task light supports the work, and accent light creates hierarchy without asking the whole room to be brighter.

Read it

  1. 01Read daylight and electric light separately. Note what disappears after sunset.
  2. 02Identify the work surface, face, object or route that actually needs light rather than increasing brightness everywhere.
  3. 03Check glare from the normal seated and standing eye positions before adding another source.

Test it

  1. 01Turn off every nonessential lamp and add back one layer at a time.
  2. 02Move or borrow a lamp before buying one; keep the source temporary for the test.
  3. 03Repeat the same task at the time of day when the room usually fails.

What counts as proof

The proof is the task becoming easier or the room reading more clearly at the failing time — not simply a higher lamp count.

  • Wiring, new circuits, recessed fixtures and other electrical work are professional territory. Room Lab can diagnose the need for a layer; it does not specify unsafe electrical work.

Decision 01

Task lighting is intended for a specific visual task, so a local temporary source is a more diagnostic test than raising overall brightness.

Decision 02

Accent lighting is directional and hierarchy-building; glare at normal eye positions is evidence that the proposed source is failing the room.

Decision 03

General, task and accent layers can be evaluated separately so the room is not made brighter everywhere to fix one missing function.
