Read the occupied room, not the empty floor

A route is the space a body needs while doors, chairs, drawers and furniture are in the positions people actually use. A piece can fit geometrically and still fail the room once it is occupied.

Read it

  1. 01Mark the real origin and destination: door to seat, fridge to sink, bed to closet — not an imaginary diagonal through furniture.
  2. 02Measure the narrowest point with doors, chairs and drawers in their normal open or occupied position.
  3. 03Separate a one-off pinch from a route that is constrained for most of its length.

Test it

  1. 01Photograph or mark the current pinch point.
  2. 02Move one reversible obstruction only.
  3. 03Walk the route carrying what the room normally asks you to carry, then measure the same narrow point again.

What counts as proof

The proof is a wider measured route with the same room in use — not a floor plan that looks cleaner.

Decide whether the route needs a move, a smaller piece, or no change

Do not jump from diagnosis to purchase. Read the signal, run the lightest reversible test, and commit only when the result survives real use. The stop column is part of the decision, not fine print.

Decision 01

Occupied pinch points must be judged against real movement; accessibility and egress requirements remain a separate minimum floor where applicable.

Decision 02

Testing a smaller or reconfigured furniture footprint is preferable to assuming that a purchase will solve a route-level constraint.

Decision 03

Observed travel behavior is useful evidence when the geometry appears adequate but people consistently create the same detour.

01Signal
The route clears on paper but narrows every time someone is seated and the table is centered.
02Reversible test
Shift the table off the walking line for three evenings and remeasure the same occupied pinch point.
03Observed result
The route widens, people stop cutting behind the sofa, and the table remains reachable from the seats.
04Decision
Keep the new position. A new table is not justified because the reversible move solved the measured problem.
