Room problem · Reset

“It is clean on Sunday and gone by Tuesday.”

What it usually is: The room has no cheap way back to zero. Every tidy is a project, so it stops happening.

Entry that never resets: A pale entry hall where a coat stand carries several coats at once, two chairs hold a leather bag and a folded coat, and boots stand on the floor beneath, beside a small green console with a mirror above it.
From the worked room below: Seven by nine. Everything the household carries lands in the doorway. A library photograph, not your room — the test that follows is for yours.

Before anything is bought

Try this first

Test · reversible
Clear the one surface that always fills, and give the three things that land there — keys, bags, post, whatever it is in your house — one named spot each within arm's reach of where they arrive. Run it for a week.
It is working if
On Tuesday evening the surface is still clear, and putting the room back takes minutes rather than an afternoon.
What would change our mind
If the pile is back within two days even with a spot for everything, the room is not short of storage. Things are stopping where the route stops — watch where bags actually land, and move the spot there.

What is the first reversible move? It works on the room you have open; with none open, it offers a worked room to start from.

Reset looks like the governing problem. Move the largest piece once — no money yet.
