Try this first

Test · reversible: Borrow two lamps you already own from other rooms: one low in the darkest corner, one at the height of the job. Leave the overhead off for three evenings.
It is working if: Half an hour after sundown you can read a page at the job without the overhead, and the dark corner stops reading as a hole.
What would change our mind: If the room still feels dark with light at three heights, more light was never the answer. Look at glare off a screen, at walls that swallow what light there is, or at seats that face nothing lit.
