A second life has to beat the room's current job on constraints

Reassigning a room is not a naming exercise. A candidate use must fit the floor, openings, daylight, privacy, storage, circulation and household demand — and the current use remains a legitimate competitor.

Adaptive-use constraint comparisonSeveral possible room uses scored against the same fixed set of constraints, including keeping the current use.currentworkreadhostevery candidate faces the same fixed constraints

Read it

  1. 01List the room's fixed assets and hard constraints before imagining a new use.
  2. 02Name what the candidate job needs from the room: light, quiet, privacy, storage, water, adjacency, or clear floor.
  3. 03Check what job would be displaced elsewhere. A local improvement can create a house-level failure.

Test it

  1. 01Prototype the new job with borrowed or movable pieces before altering the shell.
  2. 02Use the room in the proposed way for enough time to encounter the real routine, not just the reveal moment.
  3. 03Compare the candidate against keeping the current job using the same constraints and evidence.

What counts as proof

The proof is a candidate use that performs better against the declared constraints without merely exporting the old problem to another room.

Demonstrations are optional learning aids and the standards are the floor under the method. Neither is evidence about your room: Room Lab does not treat a video as proof, and a link never replaces a measured test.

Test another job for your room

Step 8 of 9 · advanced

Try it in a real room. Pick a room you want to repurpose and list the constraints the new job needs. Check each against what the room can actually offer.
